How your Priorities may be letting you down…

Would you like more time on your hands and to feel more in control of things in your life? Well if so, you might want to start with prioritising your life! This means listing from top to bottom what and who are the most important things in your life. You might also want to put next to each of them why? It’s interesting to list this and then see where you’ve actually been putting it on the priority list in reality!

Most people will put their spouse/partner, family, health and then work comes somewhat later as most important at the end of the day. But then in reality the most time and focused time is usually spent at work especially if you’re a senior executive, director of a company or CEO and who hasn’t left off your health and fitness, friends even quality time with your partner at home for work, sometimes months on end at a time. I’m the first to agree work is very important but is it more important that you sacrifice your loved ones and health for it?

So when you set your priorities you need to mean it and sometimes work does need to come first to provide for the family and then in that case start prioritizing your work so it fits more efficiently and effectively into the working day. I bet you could cross off a few things you do at work that don’t provide much value at all.

The best thing about making your priorities clear is when you come to a point where you need to make a decision. You can ensure you have a balanced life style and still keep some spontaneity in your life but remember to refer directly to your priority list as it can help keep you committed to what you’ve already decided what is most important in your life.

Don’t forget, looking after yourself and all your essential needs should be a priority for if you’re not doing this well and therefore not in control of your life then you won’t be able to look after others to your potential!

How to Prioritise Your Life?

  • Make sure all of your needs are met (each day/week; if that’s reading the paper, meditating, your exercise session, spending quality time with your partner, kids or best friend).
  • Ensure you know and commit to your priorities
  • Refer to your priorities when making decisions and ensure the decision is in line with your priorities and taking you closer to your goals in life.
  • Discard doing things that don’t rate on your priority list of importance and watch your time be freed in which you then have more time to focus on your priorities!

The Biggest Mistake You Can Make is…

Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes with the greatest mistake you can make in life is to continually fear you will make one.

To quote Swami Sivananda (Indian Yoga master, Physician, Monk and Founder of The Divine Life Society, 1887-1963)

“Do not brood over your past mistakes and failures as this will only fill your mind with grief, regret and depression. Do not repeat them in the future.”
